The Dovedale Dash is a cross country race of 4¾ miles, run by about 1200 people of all abilities. The venue is the picturesque area around the village of Thorpe and Dovedale in the south of the Derbyshire Peak District. The course is mainly along field paths and open ground in the valleys of the rivers Dove and Manifold. There are short stretches along tarmac and there is some stony ground. One of the excitements is the crossing of the river Dove at the well known Stepping-Stones.
The event has been going since 1953 and has been run every year except three when bad weather or a sodden parking area forced the Dash to be cancelled. You can read about the history here.
There are trophies for various classes, including ladies, under 18s, under 14s and over 60s. The first 1500 finishers get a certificate. Results are not published for the Dash. Times for the first 10 finishers and the prizewinners are recorded and will be displayed on the course after the finish. They will also be posted here. Positions are given on the finishing certificates. The elapsed time is displayed on the large clock on the loudspeaker van. So its a case of 'do-it-yourself'. The winners are published in the Ashbourne News Telegraph and in various running magazines. It does take time to hand out the finishing certificates, and there is usually a queue for those in the middle of the field. We do our best to speed things up, but despite considerable thought it still takes time. We're grateful for your patience. The event is run on a voluntary basis by local people, and all profits go to local charitable causes. Nowadays, the race is always held on the first Sunday in November. (In past times it used to be the nearest Sunday to November 5th). Next year's race will be on Sunday 2nd November 2008. There should be enough information on these web pages to provide all the information that you need about the race, If you do need to make contact, then you can call one of the race organisers by 'phone on 01335-350239.
