The Dovedale Dash is a cross country race of 4¾ miles, run by about 1200 people of all abilities. The venue is the picturesque area around the village of Thorpe and Dovedale in the south of the Derbyshire Peak District. The course is mainly along field paths and open ground in the valleys of the rivers Dove and Manifold. There are short stretches along tarmac and there is some stony ground. One of the excitements is the crossing of the river Dove at the well known Stepping-Stones

The event has been going since 1953 and has been run every year except three when bad weather or a sodden parking area forced the Dash to be cancelled. You can read about the history here

There is no pre-registration, and all runners must register on the day of the run.
Car parking
will not be charged.
Entry
is £5 per runner except for under-14s at £3. There are no other reductions.
Please bring the right money if you can. It saves time for signing on.
All the details are given here.

There are trophies for various classes, including ladies, under 18s, under 14s and over 60s. The first 1500 finishers get a certificate.

Children's Race

There is a separate race for the under 10's and under 8's starting at 10:00 am. Contact Chris for details on 01335-350333 or by email at chris@dovedaledash.co.uk.
There is no restriction on children running in the main race but please use your judgement and make sure they are accompanied at all times. Children running in the children's race should not be running in the main race as well. Please ensure they sign up for the appropriate race.

Results are not published for the Dash. Times for the first 10 finishers and the prizewinners are recorded and will be displayed on the course after the finish. They will also be posted here. Positions are given on the finishing certificates. The elapsed time is displayed on the large clock on the loudspeaker van. So its a case of 'do-it-yourself'. The winners are published in the Ashbourne News Telegraph and in various running magazines. It does take time to hand out the finishing certificates, and there is usually a queue for those in the middle of the field. We do our best to speed things up, but despite considerable thought it still takes time. We're grateful for your patience.

There are usually some pictures of the race - have a look on the Links page.

The event is run on a voluntary basis by local people, and all profits go to local charitable causes.

Nowadays, the race is always held on the first Sunday in November. (In past times it used to be the nearest Sunday to November 5th). Next year's race will be on Sunday 4th November 2012.

There should be enough information on these web pages to provide all the information that you need about the race,

If you do need to make contact, then you can call one of the race organisers by 'phone on 01335-350239.

You can also contact the organisers by email

Marshals Advice

  • Bob Evans is the course marshal and does a lot of pushing on the car park as well. His advice

    •  arrive early

    •  share cars as much as possible

    •  don't attempt to drive anywhere on the Pastures except where the marshals  indicate. There will be a few areas marked off,

    •  tie your running shoes/boots/flippers really well. We can't even re-sell the ones that emerge from the mud in the spring 'cos they're not in matched pairs.

Photographs - I'm happy to put photographs on the website, but please provide captions. Alternatively, upload them to one of the free websites like Photobucket or Picasa and send me a link to add to our collection. If you do that, don't forget to make them public.

Links - There are some photos and the usual local links at our link page. If you want a link, let us know. I think Mark Taylor's photo of the crossing of the Dove sums things up pretty well!
