The Dovedale Dash is a cross country race of 4¾ miles, run by about 1200 people of all abilities. The venue is the picturesque area around the village of Thorpe and Dovedale in the south of the Derbyshire Peak District. The course is mainly along field paths and open ground in the valleys of the rivers Dove and Manifold. There are short stretches along tarmac and there is some stony ground. One of the excitements is the crossing of the river Dove at the well known Stepping-Stones

The event has been going since 1953 and has been run every year except three when bad weather or a sodden parking area forced the Dash to be cancelled. You can read about the history here

There is no pre-registration, and all runners must register on the day of the run.
Car parking
costs £2 per car.
Entry
is £4 per runner, and there are no reductions.
Please bring the right money if you can. It saves time for both parking and signing on.
All the details are given here.

There are trophies for various classes, including ladies, under 18s, under 14s and over 60s. The first 1500 finishers get a certificate.

Results are not published for the Dash. Times for the first 10 finishers and the prizewinners are recorded and will be displayed on the course after the finish. They will also be posted here. Positions are given on the finishing certificates. The elapsed time is displayed on the large clock on the loudspeaker van. So its a case of 'do-it-yourself'. The winners are published in the Ashbourne News Telegraph and in various running magazines. It does take time to hand out the finishing certificates, and there is usually a queue for those in the middle of the field. We do our best to speed things up, but despite considerable thought it still takes time. We're grateful for your patience.

The event is run on a voluntary basis by local people, and all profits go to local charitable causes.

Nowadays, the race is always held on the first Sunday in November. (In past times it used to be the nearest Sunday to November 5th). Next year's race will be on Sunday 7th November 2010.

There should be enough information on these web pages to provide all the information that you need about the race,

If you do need to make contact, then you can call one of the race organisers by 'phone on 01335-350239.

You can also contact the organisers by email

Marshals Advice

  • Bob Evans is the course marshal and does a lot of pushing on the car park as well. His advice

    •  arrive early

    •  share cars as much as possible

    •  don't attempt to drive anywhere on the Pastures except where the marshals  indicate. There will be a few areas marked off,

    •  tie your running shoes/boots/flippers really well. We can't even re-sell the ones that emerge from the mud in the spring 'cos they're not in matched pairs.

The website is back in its usual place.

Sunday 1 November 2009

The Dash was won by Simon Bailey in 27:20. 1150 runners entered despite atrocious weather with drenching rain and strong winds. Results may be seen by following this link. Various items have been lost - see this link.

There is a problem with the usual website server - wouldn't there be! So it is being hosted elsewhere temporarily. Ignore the adverts top and bottom unless you are fascinated by genealogy. Sorry about that. The photo album isn't working.

Thursday 29 October 2009

Children's Race Chris Wainwright has slipped in a race, damaged his thigh and has been in hospital. He has not caught up with his emails. Ring 01335-350333 if you have queries about the children's race. It will run from the Kissing Gate on Thorpe Cloud (at the western end of the Pastures), down to the Stepping Stones and back up Lindale to the normal finish. It will start at 10:00 am, so make sure you arrive in plenty of time to sign on at the marquee.

Dogs have always run in the Dash and there has never (as far as I know) been a problem. You are welcome to run with your dog as long as it doesn't cause problems. There is no prize for the first dog home.

Wind The forecast is for strong winds over the weekend. Thorpe Pastures are exposed and our tent is vulnerable. The more people we have to get the tent down at about 1:30 pm the better. If you'd like to help we would be grateful.

Wednesday 28 October 2009

The Dash is on!

The Pastures are quite dry, so parking shouldn't be too much of a problem. The course is relatively dry but muddy in the usual places. It will probably get quite slippery on the way back from Coldwall Bridge to Thorpe Mill after the first hundred runners.

For those who need a postcode for their satnav, they should use DE6 2AW.

Wednesday 7 October 2009

Can we remind you that it is very helpful if you bring the right money for your entry fees. If we have to give change for 1000 £5 notes then we have to lay in £1000 in coins ... and we can't do that. We're grateful for your help.

Saturday 19 September 2009

There is a poster for the Dash for anyone who would like to advertise the event here. Why not print it off and pin it up in your local hostelry?

This year there will be a 'mini-dash' for the under 10's, starting at 10:00 am. Contact Chris for information.

The weather is good and the car park is dry. Cross your fingers for a good Dash.

Ancient news is on the ancient news page.
